This is a slightly modified decoy mount with an abstract pattern of sand glued onto the panel to suggest a habitat.

Not a mount that I'm really proud of but this is probably the rarest bird I have ever mounted. It was very crudely necropsied and hard to salvage. On a temporary base, waiting to be included in a larger exhibit.

King eiders are so pretty! The client brought some special shells back from Alaska so that they could be included with the mount. Handmade "rockweed" on an upgraded habitat base.

This was a perfectly mature pintail which apparently lost its "sprigs" right before it was killed. No problem! The replacements are made from trimmed and dyed pheasant feathers.

I normally mount turkey fans like this, with a rosette of trimmed rump feathers individually glued around where the beard attaches. This one had a custom-made panel which cost extra, but the mount itself is typical.

The plumage on this bird was horrible! It barely had enough feathers to cover the skin. The mount is actually attached to driftwood but I tweaked the background just for fun.

Very tiny and fragile but they make a pretty display. The lower bird is shown making its "haunted wind" sound. These were domestic aviary birds.

This little coturnix quail was wild-shot in Hawaii. The first one I have ever done, and MUCH smaller than the domesticated version. Yipes! Stripes!

Most of these birds had quite a bit of shot damage but collectively they made quite a nice display. Upgraded habitat n/c with multiple birds.

A typical, pinfeathery early-season bird like we usually get in Washington. They make reasonably good flying mounts even though they aren't as fluffy as the ones taken later in the year.

I am playing around with the habitat for these birds and will probably sell them at some point. Pen-raised from my own aviary, back when I still kept wterfowl.

This particular bird was mounted to go with a bobcat so it was only on a wire, but a mount like this would look nice coming out of a brushy habitat.

I had to hold my breath on this one. The feathers would drop at the slightest touch. It was just completed in this photo and I was holding the branch in my hand. Whew!

An older mount, and very much a salvage job! This was done before cast heads were available for this species, so the head is a skin mount. The entire back side of this bird and most of its neck was missing.

A pet bird, dead from extreme old age, mounted on her favorite swing which the client will hang back in her cage. A tough decision but she was SO gorgeous it would have been a shame to bury her.

This was a young tom but he demonstrates this pose nicely. I like this flying pose because it really shows off the beard - even when there isn't much of one to show!

This bird turned out to be in pretty bad plumage so he is still sitting around my shop gathering dust. The habitat was an experiment to see if I could combine a metal stem with a real head of wheat. It worked!

The drake is an old mount done by the late Larry Jensen. The client wanted to add a hen to the same mount so I scooted him over slightly on his rock, refreshed the moss (which had faded) and added the female. It was a tight fit, but it worked.

These birds tend to be in pretty bad plumage during their very brief season here in Washington. Once in a while there will be a good one, though, and this one made an acceptable flying mount despite some shot damage on the back side.

They are a truly beautiful duck despite their oversized beaks. This one was in exceptionally good, mature plumage.

This mount was a collaboration with Jonathan Stanley, done for the 2005 National Taxidermists Convention. There are 7 quail in this group. The wood is wirebrushed and stained to simulate old barn boards. It comes apart into sections for transport.

This is an English Trumpeter pigeon, a show breed. This one is mounted to conform to the show standard and I have been told (by a well respected pigeon judge) that she would be the world's best example of her breed if she were alive. She still turns heads at a pigeon show, even mounted!

A curiousity, because these birds are just beginning to colonize our area. (Global warming?) This one had only 2 tailfeathers and no replacements were available, so he is "creatively" arranged behind a branch. A protected species.
